Very slick, inviting "Basic Set" (three races, four classes, levels 1-3) subset of Pathfinder, which is essentially a revision of D&D 3rd Ed. with streamlined rules, enhanced tactical combat, and heroes who are intended to be heroic and who are impressive from their start. This set (and, presumably, the full Pathfinder rulebooks) has very clean, tightly-written rules, removing long built-up AD&D contradictions & pathologies (spell abuses, etc.). Pathfinder is highly interchangeable with other D&D material: it has its own milieu and set of monsters, but one could easily tailor it to more closely resemble a traditional D&D setting. N.B. multiple "Beginner Boxes" have been published: as of September 2026, the most recent release is "Pathfinder 2nd Ed *Remastered*." (There were significant changes between 1st and 2nd Edition.) This "Beginner Box" contains a Heroes Handbook and GM's Guide (with introductory adventure: more are available for free online, as are all the rules (in non-linear, searchable format)), polyhedral dice (got to love 'em!), a 24" x 30" double-sided glossy color battle map of the introductory adventure, a pamphlet for each of the four sample heroes, Play Reference Cards, blank character sheets (with sections key-coded to help new players), 124 thick die-cut standees for all monsters and heroes in the sample adventure, as well as for the 24 permutations of alternate heroes (and about 14 nice plastic bases), plus four sets of hero "action tokens" for combat. Contains some instantly-dated "woke" verbiage but very enticing... I've since ordered the four full Pathfinder 2eR core rulebooks in pocket size direct from the publisher (Paizo -- they seem to have the best price, with the bundle- and new customer-discounts) but I'm glad I treated myself to the Beginner Box for its introductory approach and to get the various contents -- rulebooks (in general) can be a little dry and uninspiring as stand alone products!
