Rolling in Tradition: The Symbols and Stones of the Aztec Dice Collection

The Aztec Collection in our Dice Around the World Kickstarter is more than just a tribute to this vibrant, ancient culture —it is a glimpse into the rich symbology and gaming culture that shaped Aztec lifestyle. Inspired by authentic historical symbols and consulted upon for accuracy, each die and accessory in this collection embodies elements of their cosmology, warfare, and spirituality that we hope inspire you to learn more about gaming throughout history.

Perhaps traditional dice as we know them today weren’t present in ancient Mesoamerican games, but the Aztecs used various dice-like tools for rituals, storytelling, and even fate.

With this thoughtful collection, we hope to honor that.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

Tonatiuh is the Aztec sun god commonly found at the center of the Sun Stone calendar. The Aztecs believed sacrifices were essential to honor him and ensure the sun’s continued existence.

Quetzalcoatl, meaning "Feathered Serpent", was a revered Aztec and Mayan creator god associated with wind, rain, science, and agriculture. It is believed in some cultures for creating the world and humanity.

The Aztecs believed the sun was essential for life and agriculture, representing vitality and renewal. While there are many depictions of the sun in Aztec culture, this symbol pulls shapes and symbols directly from the Sun Stone Calendar.

The Aztec eagle symbolized strength, courage, and the sun, was central to the Aztec's elite Eagle Warriors, and held significant ceremonial and mythological importance.

ABOUT THE STONE

Mahogany obsidian, with its deep reddish-brown hues, was highly valued by the Aztecs for crafting sharp tools and weapons.

It also held spiritual significance, linked to the god Tezcatlipoca, who was associated with obsidian mirrors used in rituals.

This stone played a key role in both Aztec warfare and spiritual practices.

ABOUT THE WOOD

Jatoba wood is currently used in Mexico, particularly for furniture and flooring. Its durability, rich color, and attractive grain make it a popular choice among artisans and builders.
