The Art That Shaped Our Love of Fantasy Is Coming to the Table
There are artists whose work you admire, and then there are artists whose work becomes part of the way you see the world.
For so many of us at Misty Mountain Gaming, Frank Frazetta belongs firmly in the second group.
His paintings introduced us to fantasy worlds that felt ancient, dangerous, and alive. We saw warriors standing against impossible odds, creatures emerging from shadow, and landscapes that seemed to hold entire histories beyond the edge of the canvas. The longer we looked, the more each painting revealed. There was always another expression to notice, another shape hidden in the darkness, or another detail that made the scene feel larger than a single captured moment.
Frazetta’s work has remained with us through every stage of our lives as fantasy fans. It influenced the books we picked up, the games we played, the characters we created, and the worlds we wanted to explore.
Now, we have the extraordinary opportunity to bring that art to the gaming table through The Frazetta Dice Collection, in collaboration with The Frazetta Art Museum.
The Artist Who Changed the Face of Fantasy
Frank Frazetta’s impact on fantasy art is difficult to measure because his influence has reached so far beyond the original paintings.
His career included comics, paperback covers, magazine illustrations, film posters, and album artwork. His paintings gave familiar fantasy subjects an intensity that felt immediate and physical. Warriors looked as though they had survived brutal lives. Monsters carried genuine menace. Every scene held motion, even when the figures stood completely still.
Death Dealer, 1973
One of his most iconic works, Death Dealer, became the cover of Molly Hatchet’s debut album. It also inspired the anime Fist of the North Star, a four-novel series starting with Prisoner of the Hornet Helmet by James Silke, a towering sculpture by Randy Bowen, countless collectible figures, two comic book series from Verotik and Opus Comics, a series of D&D adventures, video games, movies, and honestly? That’s just the beginning of the major influence this piece of art has on the fantasy landscape.
We love the terror and raw emotion that oozes from the menacing perspective of the shadow-obscured, iron-clad warrior.
For generations of fans, Frazetta’s work became a gateway into sword-and-sorcery storytelling. His famous interpretations of heroic fantasy helped establish imagery that continues to appear throughout books, films, games, music, and tabletop culture. Publications reflecting on his career have described him as one of the most influential artists of his era and credited his paintings with redefining the visual identity of fantasy.
You can stand before one of his paintings decades after it was created and feel the same tension, awe, and anticipation that captivated its earliest viewers. The techniques and tools available to artists have changed, but the emotional force of Frazetta’s work has never faded.
His art asks you to imagine what happened before the scene and what might happen next. It pulls you into a world without explaining every detail. That mystery is part of why these paintings remain so compelling, and why they continue to inspire new generations of artists and storytellers.
A Collection We Never Imagined We Would Get to Create
When you have loved someone’s work for most of your life, being given the chance to create something around that legacy carries an enormous amount of emotion. We’re truly honored and excited to show you what we’ve been working on.
Frazetta’s paintings mean something personal to people. Fans remember the first cover they discovered, the print that hung in their childhood bedroom, or the image that shaped their earliest idea of what fantasy could be. We share those memories. We understand the attachment because we feel it too.
We wanted every part of this collection to come from that place of admiration. His paintings have inspired countless journeys into fantasy. Soon, they can become part of the stories unfolding at your own table.
Barbarian, 1966
The Frazetta Dice Collection was inspired by some of his most beloved artwork, with each design developed to carry the mood and visual power of the original painting into a new form. The Kickstarter campaign will feature one-of-a-kind dice sets created to highlight some of our favorite pieces from Frazetta’s body of work. Each dice set will be a standalone piece of art, and we hope will become one of your go-to sets that fit perfectly with any tabletop campaign you run.
Made for the Fans Who Never Stopped Looking
We hope this collection inspires you every time you see those dramatic skies, powerful silhouettes, and shadowed worlds. For collectors who have spent years surrounding themselves with the artwork they love, or for the tabletop players who may be discovering Frazetta for the first time and are about to understand why his name carries so much weight. If you love fantasy art, you’re about to snag one of the most unique dice sets we’ve ever released.
We are still keeping much of the collection under wraps. The full designs deserve their own moment, and we cannot wait to share them.
For now, we can say that this collaboration is unlike anything we have created before. We feel incredibly fortunate to help bring it to life, and we have approached it with the care that comes from being dedicated fans ourselves.
The Kickstarter is launching soon. Follow the campaign now to be there when the full collection is revealed.
